Maria Cole, Diversity Retention and Recruitment Coordinator in the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action at The University of Montana, recently completed all certification requirements to become a Certified Diversity Professional (CDP) through the Institute for Diversity Certification.

Requirements for the credential include two years of work experience in the field of diversity or human resource management, a score of at least 80 percent on the CDP exam, and completion of an approved project. Cole’s candidate project was a diversity climate analysis for Missoula College.

Cole has worked in her current position as the Diversity Retention and Recruitment Coordinator for one year; prior to that, she worked in UM’s Human Resource Services for three and a half years as Recruitment Manager.

Cole’s work as Diversity Retention and Recruitment Coordinator includes analysis and reporting of data related to workforce diversity, representing UM to regional and national organizations, and establishing relationships and pipelines to effectively recruit and retain women and underrepresented populations. She also works to educate the campus community to ensure the implementation of best practices related to diversity, ensure that applicant pools reflect the reasonable availability of females and underrepresented groups and take steps to correct deficiencies, and seek external funding for diversity projects designed to increase recruitment and retention of faculty, contract professionals, and staff from underrepresented populations.

Cole recently represented UM at the Minority Faculty Recruitment and Retention Conference in Las Vegas in November and at the SACNAS annual conference in Seattle in October.
